Belli Clarinetti is a clarinet quartet led by Lucy Rainey comprising Marie Willis, Claire Young and Dave North who are all clarinettists in the Nelson Symphony Orchestra.

Belli Clarinetti means Beautiful Clarinets in Italian and our quartet loves to celebrate the beautiful sound of the clarinet family and its wonderful versatility across a wide range of musical genres.

The clarinet is one of music’s great ‘shape-shifters’ with its lyrical, agile, and endlessly adaptable ‘voice’ and we celebrate this quality in our concert programme which comprises music from classical, romantic, jazz, tango and jazz styles.

Passionate about the clarinet, our Belli Clarinetti quartet are looking forward to sharing their love of this instrument with you.

Player Bios

Lucy holds a Masters in Music, a BA (Eng/Fr) and an FTCL (clarinet performance) and she has extensive experience as an orchestral clarinettist, chamber and jazz musician, choral singer and teacher. Lucy has been invited to present papers on the close expressive links between the voice and the clarinet at the international Clarinet Fests in Italy and Dublin.

Marie holds a Bachelor of Music (Hons), specialist pedagogy training in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Music Therapy. Alongside performing, she teaches both clarinet and piano, bringing a strong educational and expressive focus to her music-making.

Claire gained a wealth of musical experience playing the clarinet in quartets, orchestras and concert bands throughout her school and university years. After returning to the clarinet as an adult, she has rediscovered her love of ensemble playing in Belli Clarinetti and the Nelson Symphony Orchestra.

Dave (on bass clarinet) brings a strong jazz background and rhythmic drive to Belli Clarinetti. He studied jazz at Victoria University of Wellington and performed for many years with the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band. Dave continues to perform with a variety of different groups in Nelson and he is the current Chair of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra.
