SUMMARY:NCMA presents International Jazz: Charlie Porter Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Two phenomenal jazz artists from the US\, Charlie Porter (trumpet) and David Rozenblatt (drums) will join respected NZ musicians Mat Fields (bass) and Nick Granville (guitar) for a one-off jazz session in the Nelson School of Music Auditorium. \nWith a sweeping collection of new music\, acclaimed trumpeter/composer Charlie Porter gathers a dynamic group of forward-looking musicians to celebrate America’s rich immigrant history. In a time when immigration policy has become a heart-wrenching\, polarizing topic\, Porter felt compelled to reclaim the uniting power of the word ‘immigrant’ through art\, knowing its healing capacity can be great when crafted with intention. The ensemble burns and soars while embracing many global influences that have found their way into the music\, including elements from Porter’s Lebanese/Greek/Italian heritage\, all while fully living in the essence and language of jazz. \nInternationally acclaimed trumpeter and composer Charlie Porter first cut his teeth on the New York jazz scene\, while simultaneously studying classical trumpet performance at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of famed trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Charlie has since delved into many projects from jazz and classical to Arabic\, Indian\, African\, Australian Aboriginal and Korean music\, seeking to find common ground among all “good music” and avoiding the pigeonholing of genre labels. \nCharlie has toured the world as a side-man and band-leader in jazz and also as a classical soloist and chamber musician\, performing and recording with many notable musicians and groups over the last twenty years ranging from jazz greats like Joe Zawinul\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Charli Persip and Chuck Israels to classical artists such as Simone Dinnerstein\, Sarah Chang\, and Joyce DiDonato as well as world music greats Goran Bregovic\, Marcel Khalife and Kim Duksoo\, among many others. \nPorter holds degrees from The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of music in jazz and classical performance. He was also a Fulbright Scholar at the Paris Conservatory. Among many awards to his credit\, Charlie was the first trumpeter to win 1st place in both the classical and jazz divisions of the National Trumpet Competition. As a composer\, he has been commissioned by Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Foundation. \nTickets $30 (+ service fee). Credit card fees apply. \nCash and eftpos available for door sales at Nelson Centre of Musical Arts from 9am – 5pm\, Monday to Friday and one hour prior to the scheduled performance time. \nPlease contact Nelson Centre of Musical Arts if you require wheelchair seating on 03 548 9477 or music@ncma.nz \n

SUMMARY:NCMA's Lunchtime Concert Series: Mendelssohn Piano Trio
DESCRIPTION:Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor\, Op. 49\, was completed on 23 September 1839 and published the following year. The work is scored for a standard piano trio consisting of violin\, cello and piano. The trio is one of Mendelssohn’s most popular chamber works and is recognised as one of his greatest. \nDuring the initial composition of the work\, Mendelssohn took the advice of fellow composer Ferdinand Hiller to revise the piano part. \nThe revised version was in a more romantic\, Schumannesque style with the piano given a more important role in the trio. Indeed\, the revised piece was reviewed by Schumann\, who declared Mendelssohn to be “the Mozart of the nineteenth century\, the brightest musician\, who most clearly understands the contradictions of the age and is the first to reconcile them.” \nNCMA’s Lunchtime Concert Series is proudly sponsored by Nelson Pine Industries \nA merchant fee may be charged on credit and debit card transactions. \nCash and eftpos available for door sales at Nelson Centre of Musical Arts from 9am – 5pm\, Monday to Friday. Tickets also available through all Ticket Rocket outlets (Theatre Royal Nelson\, Richmond Mall\, Nelson\, Motueka and Blemheim i-SITE etc.). \nPlease contact Nelson Centre of Musical Arts if you require wheelchair seating on 03 548 9477 or music@ncma.nz. \n

SUMMARY:Chamber Music New Zealand: JUILLIARD415
DESCRIPTION:\nNext generation baroque\, this chamber orchestra of young players from one of the world’s most distinguished music schools starts our season with a bang. The New York Times describes Juilliard415 as an ensemble who plays with “consistent poise\, and hair-trigger responsiveness” under such prominent artists as William Christie\, Jordi Savall and Rachel Podger. For their New Zealand tour\, Juilliard415 perform under the leadership of early music legend violinist Robert Mealy in a programme contrasting two baroque styles. \n“Our programs are a dialogue between the two main musical languages in the baroque\, the French and the Italian styles\, focusing on Rome where Corelli was inventing the orchestra in the 1680s and Paris where Lully did the same thing at about the same time. The French pieces explore various dance forms\, including everything from brilliant gigues to slow sarabandes\, while the Italian works are fiery concertos: a nice contrast of styles!” – Robert Mealy \nThis programme also features a new commission from Dame Gillian Whitehead providing a striking contrast between old and new. \nPresented in association with The Juilliard School through the generous support of Sarah Billinghurst Solomon \nPROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS\nRAMEAU | Suite from “Dardanus”\nVIVALDI | Concerto in D major for two violins and two cellos\, RV564\nVIVALDI | Concerto for flute in G minor\, RV439 “La notte”\nLULLY | Suite from “Thésée”\nCORELLI | Concerto grosso in D major\, Op 6\, No 7 \nRunning time I 95 minutes including an interval \nAdditional information\nPre-Concert Talk I A pre-concert talk will take place 45 minutes prior to the performance. DESCRIPTION:\nLove and loss. Home and hope. Iraqi-American composer and oud player\, Rahim AlHaj and percussionist Nicholas Baker joins NZSQ and double bassist\, Joan Perarnau Garriga\, with Letters from Iraq. \nAlHaj’s musical response expressing the love and pain of lives lived by the people of war-torn Iraq. SUMMARY:NCMA's Lunchtime Concert Series: Grampians Trio
DESCRIPTION:Piano Trios are one of the most common forms of chamber music.  The standard trio includes violin and cello.  The piano trios of the classical era are dominated by the piano with the string doubling the piano parts.  This was usually to give pianos more resonance as at that time pianos were quite weak in tone.  But by the 19thcentury all three instruments hold their own. The piano has both solo and accompanying roles which free up the strings to play in a more soloistic fashion. \nOver the centuries the piano trio has gained a repertoire of exceptional size and richness.  Many composers were also pianists and reserved their most expressive and intimate compositions for this ensemble. \nThe Grampians Trio will perform Trio no 1 in G minor ‘Elegiac’ by Rachmaninov and Trio op 90 ‘Dumky’ by Dvořák. \nNCMA’s Lunchtime Concert Series is proudly sponsored by Nelson Pine Industries \nA merchant fee may be charged on credit and debit card transactions. \n
