About Virginia Ward

Virginia had her early musical education in Wellington, learning piano and violin. On moving to Nelson she studied piano with Kathleen Barnett and Harold Colombatti, gained her LRSM Diploma and joined the teaching staff of the School of Music (now NCMA). Further piano studies followed in London, with Brigitte Wild, then back in Nelson with Thelma Robinson.

In addition to teaching at NCMA, Virginia has given individual piano tuition and beginner violin classes at Nelson Colleges. She also plays the violin in the Nelson Symphony Orchestra and has performed as a solo pianist with the orchestra. Virginia is an experienced accompanist and plays in various chamber music ensembles.

Skills and expertise

Virginia’s aim is to make learning music an enjoyable experience for everyone she teaches. Tuition is tailored to suit the age, ability and individual needs of each student. Practice methods are established to facilitate the learning process, along with a thorough understanding of music theory, aural awareness, and performance technique.

Virginia emphasises the importance of tonal quality in playing an instrument and high priority is given to interpretation of the pieces performed so that students develop a true appreciation of the music. Above all she promotes the love of music as a joyful life-enhancing activity. She is also happy to enter students for exams if they wish.
