About Margy Wallace
Margy’s love for music began at six, lying in bed, captivated by the beautiful music her grandmother played on the piano. This connection to her past has shaped her life, weaving a rich tapestry of music that continues to bring her joy. At boarding school, she shared this love by teaching piano and singing, even guiding one student to sit their Grade 3 exam while she prepared for Grade 8. Playing the piano reminded her of home and gave her a sense of freedom.
Margy chose teaching over conducting, a decision that deepened her connection to music. Even now, she seeks to further her skills, hoping to one day lead a community choir in Wakefield.
Music has been a constant thread through her life, reconnecting her to her roots and creating new memories. She recently experienced a moment of pure joy, playing piano and singing with her mother, sister, and daughter—three generations united by music.
Margy is now dedicated to helping her students find this same joy, believing that the connection between past and present enriches our lives. She hopes to inspire her students to carry this legacy forward, enjoying music throughout their lives.
Skills and expertise
With over 25 years of teaching experience, Margy has made a significant impact as a Music Specialist in both Nelson and Australia. Her commitment to music education is evident in her work with choirs and ensemble performances for church services.
Margy has also served as Music Director and accompanist for Nelson Youth Theatre and Wakefield Country Players Musicals. For the past three years, she has taught Beginner to Intermediate piano privately and in schools.
Originally trained in traditional sight-reading, Margy now uses multi-modal activities to engage younger students, incorporating movement, singing, and playing to reinforce learning. She emphasises foundational harmonic skills, helping even beginners learn chord structures. With her recent experience in Songwriting, she guides intermediate students in improvising and composing their own songs, teaching them to read lead sheets while singing and playing.
Margy’s goal is to instill a lifelong passion for music in her students, empowering them to enjoy musical experiences with confidence.
