About Jonna Arthur

Jonna was born and raised in England. At school she had a wonderful violin teacher who had studied with Otkar Sevcik, followed by another great teacher, Isolde Menges, a former student of Leopold Auer, at the Royal College of Music. After arriving in NZ, playing chamber music, itinerant and private teaching, started in earnest. In 1980, Jonna moved to Auckland and attended Teachers Training College, followed by a full-time itinerant teaching job and fifteen years playing in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. From 1996 to 2018, Jonna taught at the Music Education Centre, Glenfield, and during that time, was fortunate to be able to take a group of musicians to New Caledonia annually for ten years, doing choral and chamber music concerts.

Skills and expertise

Each lesson is shaped to the student’s age ability and needs, as no two are alike.  Sassmanshaus books 1 to 4 lay a great foundation for beginners. If students want to, and are ready, Jonna is happy to enter students for ABRSM exams. She encourages students to get a theory teacher and do those exams also. This is a path taken by the more serious music student, often sabotaged by pressure of school work. She would then encourage the homework/practise ‘club sandwich.’

Jonna has valuable experience working with autistic students and has taken the initiative to educate herself by reading books written by autistic authors, gaining insights into their unique cognitive processes. She has tailored her lessons to be both stimulating and creative, adapting to the specific needs of each student. While some students prefer a more relaxed and enjoyable approach to playing, it is important to maintain consistent daily practice for continued progress.
