About Music Therapist: Emma Matthews

She has been practicing as a music therapist since 2008 and working predominantly in specialist education in various regions around the country. Emma works with tamariki and kaiako to develop hoslistic practice, and contracts with various agencies and educative settings within te waipounamu.

Skills and expertise

Emma’s skill set is based on creating trusting relationships between therapist and client. She has particular experience working with students that happen to have physical or learning needs. Emma can support clients and whānau with:

  • Intellectual & physical disability
  • Autistic spectrum disorder
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Sensory impairment
  • Supervision
  • Training (student teaching/visiting music therapist)
  • All ages are considered for referrals

Emma is able to provide consultation with teachers using a therapeutic framework, and is open to developing and sharing skills with families, educational facilities, and other allied health professionals.
