NELSON SUMMER CHORAL ACADEMY 2027

Teapot Valley Choral Camp Reimagined

A focused choral academy led by former King’s Singer Tim Wayne-Wright.

Join singers from across Aotearoa for a week of inspiring choral music-making in the heart of Nelson. The Nelson Summer Choral Academy brings together experienced choir singers for a residential-style programme of rehearsals, workshops, shared meals and performance, led by an outstanding team of musicians including former countertenor in The King's Singers, Tim Wayne-Wright.

Building on the long tradition of Teapot Valley Choral Camp, the academy offers a fresh and carefully structured week designed to strengthen musicianship, vocal technique and ensemble singing in a supportive and social environment. Repertoire will range from rich choral classics to lighter contemporary works, with a particular focus on the art of a cappella singing, communication through text, vocal colour and ensemble blend.

DATES

17–23 January 2027
Nelson Centre of Musical Arts

Directed by Tim Wayne-Wright, this week-long academy brings singers together in a focused and supportive rehearsal environment, culminating in a public performance.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

Participants arrive on Sunday 17 January and settle into their accommodation, with options including Clarice Johnstone House just a short walk from NCMA. The week begins with an evening welcome and an informal opening session to meet fellow singers and the artistic team.

Across the week, activities include:

  • Full choir repertoire in a supportive ensemble setting
  • Sectional rehearsals to build confidence and accuracy
  • Singing both with and without accompaniment
  • Vocal technique and ensemble skills
  • Rhythm workshop
  • Technique Workshop led by Judy Bellingham
  • Shared lunches and morning and afternoon teas, with time to connect and relax
  • A final public performance

Repertoire

This academy is designed not just for performance, but for development. Through a focused week of rehearsal, singers will build confidence, strengthen ensemble skills, and develop a more secure and responsive choral sound – skills they can take back into their own choirs.

A varied a cappella programme will take shape across the week, spanning five centuries from Byrd to The Beatles.

At its heart are two striking works. Bruckner’s Motets bring a rich, resonant sound world – powerful, expressive and deeply atmospheric. In contrast, Bob Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass adds energy and colour, performed with piano, bass and drums, and full of rhythmic drive and character.

Both works are approachable within a supportive rehearsal setting, with plenty of guidance to help singers settle into the style and feel confident in performance.
