NBS Live Lounge: The Violet Project

‘The Violet Project’ is a three-piece indie-pop band hailing from Whakatū (Nelson), New Zealand.

Comprised of Emma Common (lead vocals and bass), Luke Wilkes (guitar) and Sam Edmonds (drums), originally three independent musicians in their own right, together, they produce a sound that is best described as rich and melancholic, blended with ruminative and introspective lyrics, and existential themes.

The band plays music inspired by artists such as Phoebe Bridgers, Lizzy McAlpine, The Beths, and Bright Eyes.

The seed of ‘The Violet Project’ was planted throughout Emma’s time studying Commercial Music at Massey University, in Wellington. As part of her honours project, she was inspired to create music which bridged-the-gap between narrative storytelling of the theatrical and the entertainment-value and marketability of contemporary sound. Since then, they’ve spent time exploring their sound and song writing abilities, and performing gigs at local venues across the region, and soon, the motu.
