Liam Muir

Liam’s musical journey commenced at the age of 14 when he picked up the guitar. Fueled by a genuine passion for alternative rock music, he began forming bands with friends and delved into writing, recording, and performing original music. Following his graduation from high school, Liam pursued his musical ambitions by enrolling in the University of Canterbury, where he completed a Bachelor of Music degree with a major in jazz guitar. Since then he has been teaching guitar and classroom music in Christchurch, Auckland and then Nelson. Alongside his teaching commitments, Liam joined the band Decades.  Together, they achieved notable milestones, including recording and touring across New Zealand and Australia, as well as releasing an album under the Warner Music label. Liam’s musical talents extend beyond his own endeavors, as he has also written songs for other artists.

Liam is a versatile guitar instructor who is experienced in teaching students of all ages and skill levels. With a specialisation in jazz, rock, and contemporary guitar, he tailors his lessons to align with his students’ musical interests. By incorporating their preferred music choices, Liam ensures an engaging and personalised learning experience. He provides comprehensive instruction that encompasses technique and theory as necessary, utilising a diverse range of resources. Liam is well-versed in the Rockschool syllabus and readily transcribes pieces as needed, offering a well-rounded approach to guitar education.
