Join them at NCMA for an evening exploring a rich cross-section of compositional voices and celebrating the art of storytelling through music. \nHenry Purcell Fantasias \nAnthony Ritchie Perpetual Motion and Last Dance from String Quartet No.3\, ‘In Time’ \nFanny Mendelssohn String Quartet in E flat major \nInterval \nSalina Fisher Heal \nBenjamin Britten String Quartet No. 2\, in C major (Op. 36) \n‘Transform’ opens with Henry Purcell’s intricately wrought Fantasias\, which served as inspiration for Benjamin Britten. Following is Anthony Ritchie\, one of Aotearoa’s most eminent composers\, celebrating playful melodic lines and infectious rhythm in Perpetual Motion and Last Dance from String Quartet No. 3. Fanny Mendelssohn’s only string quartet showcases her poetic\, passionate and introspective voice\, too long overlooked in the shadow of her brother\, Felix. Salina Fisher’s soothing tribute to grief and loss in Heal serves as a poignant companion to Benjamin Britten’s second string quartet. Written in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War and widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary pieces of the twentieth century\, Britten offers a powerful reflection of his inner feelings and a moving tribute to his compositional idol\, Henry Purcell. \nThe concert programme\, crafted in our signature style\, aims to engage audiences of all levels of familiarity with chamber music. Those bowls of fruit we see framed in museums – sort of lovely and banal\, at first glance\, but then richer when considered in the long story of humans painting things that they see\, over and over and over again… More angles reveal themselves – more perspectives and corners and stories\, more understanding – more appreciation of something that most would consider unremarkable.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Concert: Mozart in Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a delightful programme of music by Mozart in the company of members of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra and fortepianist/conductor Andrew Ward. \nThis concert will attempt to evoke the atmosphere of late eighteenth-century Vienna\,  through the use of a facsimile 1784 fortepiano built by Mozart’s favourite pianomaker\, Johann Stein. \nThe two men got on extremely well and much of Mozart’s piano music was clearly written with Stein’s instruments in mind. Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A major\, KV 414 will be complemented by one of his most famous works for chamber orchestra\, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. \nThere is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy in this concert\, so do come along! \nBiography \nAndrew Ward is a renowned fortepianist and conductor\, who has given recitals across Australia and New Zealand. Born in England\, he began his musical career at Westminster Abbey Choir School\, before going on to study music at King’s College\, London and Birmingham Conservatoire. Andrew has recently worked with the eminent fortepianist Professor Michael Tsalka\, and was invited to perform at the 2025 Piano Panoply in Perth\, Australia. Recent conducting engagements include the Solo Spotlight Concert with the Nelson Symphony Orchestra\, working with some of New Zealand’s finest young concerto soloists. He is currently in the process of completing a PhD in Creative Practice on piano music of the late eighteenth-century\, for which he has been granted a full doctoral scholarship from the University of Auckland.

While in New York\, she won the New York Flute Club and Artists International Competitions\, resulting in debut recitals at Carnegie and CAMI Halls. \nMichael Tsalka is currently serving as an Assistant Professor and a Doctoral Supervisor at the School of Music\, The Chinese University of Hong Kong\, Shenzhen.  As a concert pianist and early keyboard performer\, he has won numerous prizes in Europe\, Asia\, North America\, and Latin America. He is a versatile musician who performs repertoire from the late Renaissance era to our days.
