SUMMARY:Nikolai Saratovsky Piano Recital
DESCRIPTION:Nikolai Saratovsky is an internationally acclaimed Russian concert pianist with an extraordinary repertoire. \nMary Gow\, organiser of the Mulled Wine Concerts discovered Saratovsky in 2018 when he played in Brussels as a young pianist after succeeding in several important piano competitions in Europe. “I was amazed by his virtuosity” says Gow\, a concert pianist herself\, “He not only had a love for the music\, he had all the technical skill-set you need to express yourself fully on the piano”. She told him she came from New Zealand and he then told her that he and his Japanese-born wife had always dreamed of visiting New Zealand! As Gow notes\, “from there\, it was a short step to discussing possibilities…” \nHis effect on audiences here was remarkable – everyone who heard him on his repeated concert tours in the North Island knew that they were seeing and hearing something special. Since then\, audiences around the world have come to the same conclusion. Saratovsky is now a professor of piano at the huge music school of Taiwan University where he combines teaching and academic research with his performing career\, appearing in major concert venues worldwide. He also gives master-classes for aspiring international concert pianists. \nNikolai himself says this of his visits here: “This will be already the fifth time I am coming to NZ\, and every time I feel extremely happy to come. I have lived and worked in Taiwan for more than 6 years. I have many memories from NZ. New Zealand is very different from Taiwan\, and for me it’s very important to “charge my inner spiritual battery”. Coming to New Zealand is the ideal choice. Combination of meeting my lovely friends\, conversations beside the fire place\, fantastic sunsets\, and music making makes this trip truly remarkable” He has chosen a wonderful set of music for his recital: “I chose this program by myself\, because at this moment of life I prefer to play something that gives me a positive energy. I feel very compassionate with these music works\, and they help me to recover during difficult times. I am happy to share this beautiful music with the audience\, and I am looking forward for this fascinating musical journey”. The concert will start with Western European romantic composers and conclude with pieces by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. \nMary Gow feels that his visit to New Zealand represents a wonderful opportunity for audiences in the South Island to catch a star already well known in Europe\, Russia and the Far East. “This concert I regard as one of the most important and for the South\, not-to-be-missed!” Mulled Wine Concerts will sponsor his appearance at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts (NCMA)\, Nelson.

SUMMARY:Harp in Harmony
DESCRIPTION:Music\, and the instruments used to make it\, tells the most evocative stories. \nNSO is delighted to present Harp in Harmony\, a collaboration with guest conductor Anthony Ferner and renowned Kiwi harpist\, Helen Webby\, where remembrance\, romance\, reflection and heroism intertwine. \nThe concert begins with New Zealand composer Anthony Ritchie’s poignant Remember Parihaka\, before Helen takes to the stage for Ernst von Dohnányi’s unique Concertino for Harp and Chamber Orchestra – one of the composer’s later works\, written when he was 75\, and widely believed to portray his search for a peaceful end to his troubled life. \nWe end with Beethoven’s 7th Symphony\, a masterpiece of rhythm and energy that introduced the musical dynamic ‘fff’ – fortississimo\, ‘louder than as loud as possible’ – for the first time ever in an orchestral work. Unifying these three compositions is a feeling of finding hope and peace amid adversity and hardship – a concept that is as relevant today as ever.

SUMMARY:NBS Live Lounge: Keith & Drew - Folk Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Keith & Drew – Folk Sessions \nSome of the best musical moments happen when two musicians step out from the familiar and give themselves permission to just play. That’s exactly what Keith & Drew – Folk Sessions is all about. \nKeith and Drew are known to Nelson audiences as members of Irish band – Paddy’s Knob\, where they’ve built a reputation for energetic\, crowd-pleasing sessions rooted in Celtic folk and Irish pub scene. But for this Live Lounge appearance at the NCMA\, they’re stripping things right back and letting the music breathe. \nExpect acoustic guitar and mandolin woven together in close harmony – two instruments that were made for each other. Keith’s warm rhythm guitar provides the foundation\, while Drew’s mandolin brings colour\, texture\, and that distinctive bluegrass sparkle that turns a simple song into something that gets right under your skin. Both musicians share vocal duties\, their voices blending naturally across a set that draws from the rich well of folk and bluegrass tradition. \nThe repertoire spans American bluegrass classics\, traditional folk songs\, and carefully chosen covers that showcase the duo’s musicianship and their genuine love of the craft. This is a more considered\, more intimate side of two musicians who are very comfortable on stage together. Keith & Drew – Folk Sessions is the kind of set that reminds you why acoustic music endures: because at its best\, it’s just two people\, a couple of instruments\, and a room full of good listening. \nBrief Artist Biography \nKeith Nolan is a Dublin-born singer and guitarist whose Irish roots are front and centre in everything he plays. Lead vocalist of Nelson Irish band Paddy’s Knob and a well-loved solo performer across the top of the South Island\, Keith brings warmth\, grit\, and genuine heart to every stage he steps on. \nDrew is a Nelson-based multi-instrumentalist and former member of the Mean Fiddler house band. Equally at home on drums\, guitar\, mandolin\, or behind a microphone\, he’s most recently been lending his talent to Paddy’s Knob – and for this show\, his mandolin takes centre stage. \nTwo seasoned musicians. One great night of folk. \nSponsored by NBS. \n$5 door charge for non-ncma members (members are free).  Membership can also be purchased at the door.

SUMMARY:New Zealand String Quartet presents: Transform
DESCRIPTION:Behind every piece of music is a story and across their 2026 Season\, the New Zealand String Quartet is diving into them. Join them at NCMA for an evening exploring a rich cross-section of compositional voices and celebrating the art of storytelling through music. \nHenry Purcell Fantasias \nAnthony Ritchie Perpetual Motion and Last Dance from String Quartet No.3\, ‘In Time’ \nFanny Mendelssohn String Quartet in E flat major \nInterval \nSalina Fisher Heal \nBenjamin Britten String Quartet No. 2\, in C major (Op. 36) \n‘Transform’ opens with Henry Purcell’s intricately wrought Fantasias\, which served as inspiration for Benjamin Britten. Following is Anthony Ritchie\, one of Aotearoa’s most eminent composers\, celebrating playful melodic lines and infectious rhythm in Perpetual Motion and Last Dance from String Quartet No. 3. Fanny Mendelssohn’s only string quartet showcases her poetic\, passionate and introspective voice\, too long overlooked in the shadow of her brother\, Felix. Salina Fisher’s soothing tribute to grief and loss in Heal serves as a poignant companion to Benjamin Britten’s second string quartet. Written in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War and widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary pieces of the twentieth century\, Britten offers a powerful reflection of his inner feelings and a moving tribute to his compositional idol\, Henry Purcell. \nThe concert programme\, crafted in our signature style\, aims to engage audiences of all levels of familiarity with chamber music. Each piece of music is preceded by a lively and informative introduction delivered by the Quartet members themselves. These introductions seek to shed light on the stories behind the music\, making it an enriching experience suitable for all audiences. \nLearn more about the NZSQ’s 2026 Season: nzsq.org.nz/upcoming-concerts \n7.00 – 8.30pm including interval
