NMIT presents ORIGINS – the heart of NZ Music
- This event has passed.

Three seismic “firsts” originated here in Nelson: in 1894 Aoteoroa/NZ’s first music school was established – the Nelson School of Music; in 1990, Smokefreerockquest became a national event; the Nelson School of Music’s “Contemporary Music Performance Course” offered Aoteoroa/NZ’s first tertiary qualification in Contemporary Music.
‘ORIGINS’ is a musical event celebrating emerging NZ Certificate and Diploma in Music student songwriters studying at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. 2019 marks the inaugural year which features the students playing alongside luminaries already established in the industry. This year we are proud to present our feature artist, Julia Deans, who, not only will be performing, but also running a workshop in the Johnny Cash Room (G104) at NMIT earlier in the day. NMIT offer two full-year, full-time contemporary music programmes, as well as concerts throughout the year. In addition, public ‘Guru Sessions’ give local musicians and songwriters an opportunity to share with high-profile artists and bands in a workshop environment. For more information please contact the NMIT Music department via email [email protected] or [email protected].
