NCMA’s Lunchtime Series: Beethoven Piano Trio “Archduke”
Archduke Piano Trio no 7 in B -flat opus 97
“The Archduke” Piano Trio; the last and greatest of Beethoven’s seven piano trios was dedicated to his friend and the most generous of his patrons the Archduke Rudolf of Austria. The Archduke was the instigator of a generous annual allowance to free Beethoven from financial pressures, for the rest of his life, on condition that he lived in Vienna. When the other donors dropped out (one became bankrupt and fled from Vienna, one died after falling off his horse) the Archduke unhesitatingly made up the deficit. This may have some bearing on the open hearted warmth and beauty which permeate the whole work.
