NBS Live Lounge: Ceol Merchants

Ceol Merchants Live Lounge Website Banner (13)
Davy Stuart, Brendyn Montgomery, Barrie McDonald
‘The Ceol Merchants’
(Purveyors of Fine Traditional Music)
‘Ceol’ means ‘Music’ in both Irish and Scottish Gaelic and it’s the music of these countries that has been a lifelong passion for all the Band.
The Names of the 3 Musicians would suggest links to Scotland and Northern Ireland, and indeed, Davy is the ‘Scot’ from Edinburgh (he can see the Castle from the Family home). Brendyn and Barrie, by heritage (a modicum of Fine Malt Whiskey helped to sway the DNA towards the Celtic Tribes). Together they will play a selection of Airs from these Celtic shores, some will be lively Reels and Jigs, and we will also add a couple of the slower and more reflective pieces.
About the musicians:
Davy Stuart: Davy moved to NZ with his music in 1989 and since then has toured widely in NZ and Australia with Rua, Claddagh and as a Duo with Harpist Helen Webby. For the past 30 years he has also been a full-time Luthier and has a world-wide reputation for his stringed instruments.
Brendyn Montgomery: Is one of NZ’s leading traditional Irish musicians, playing Flute, Whistle and Fiddle. He has an M.A. in Traditional Irish music performance (1st class honours) from the University of Limerick. Brendyn has performed in Australia as well as Auckland, Wellington, Whare Flat Folk Festivals and also ‘The Gaidhealtachd’ (Whangarei Heads). He is a frequent tutor at Ceol Aneas.
Barrie McDonald: He was 9 years old when the Accordion was thrust into his hand by his mother. In 1970 he found the Folk scene much to his liking so began playing Banjo and Mandolin also. He moved to Chch and became involved in Bluegrass, Irish, Country Rock, Scottish Country Dance, Bush Band, and with a wonderful group called ‘Claddagh’. Barrie is not opposed to the ocassional bit of Gypsy Jazz influence in his playing.
