Martin Setchell Organ Concert: The Organist Entertains
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear internationally-renowned concert organist MARTIN SETCHELL (Christchurch Town Hall and Canterbury University) in ‘The Organist Entertains’.
Just back from his annual overseas tour which this year took him to England, Germany, France and Switzerland, ‘New Zealand’s most widely-travelled concert organist’ has delighted audiences the world over with his spirited playing, lively personality and entertaining repertoire. He has recently performed at prestigious venues like the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City,USA, the Town Halls of Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, Australia, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Oriental Arts Centre in Shanghai, China, the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore, Musashino Civic Cultural Hall in Tokyo, Japan, Birmingham Town Hall, St Paul’s Cathedral, London, St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, the historic Gabler organ in Weingarten Abbey, and Regensburg Cathedral, Germany.
His engaging organ concerts appeal to all ages and are often spiced with characteristic touches of English humour. Who says that organ music can’t be fun? Far from ignoring his audience from the isolation of a loft, he takes them with him to the console.
This will be an ‘English Town Hall style’ concert, perfectly suited to the 1913 Cawthron Organ, (not a church or Cathedral-style recital). In his own inimitable way, Martin will introduce and play a varied and appealing programme with something for all tastes. Come and enjoy the grandeur of Handel’s Overture to the Occasional Oratorio, Bach’s Sinfonia from Cantata 29, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March and Wagner’s ‘Pilgrim’s Chorus’ from Tannhãuser.
Tap your toes to Lefébure-Wély’s Bolero de Concert. Be soothed by glorious melodies of yesteryear like ‘Moonlight and Roses’ (Lemare’s celebrated Andantino), and Sullivan’s immortal The Lost Chord.
Also included will be items from his highly successful CDs like the ‘Bonbons for Organ’ series, and Great Australasian Organs VII featuring the Rieger Organ of Christchurch Town Hall (Priory 1031, UK) which are regularly aired on Radio New Zealand’s Concert FM and on radio in England, Australia and America.

(Bruce Steele, Organ Australia)
