Sixty singers from around New Zealand will present a programme of choral music by 13 different composers from across England, Europe, America and New Zealand. The music was the choice of Tecwyn Evans, a New Zealander whose early music career was steeped in choral music. He is now the Artistic Director of the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra in Denmark. Tecwyn’s chosen music for the choir includes works by Brahms and Rheinberger from the 19th century, Elgar, Britten, Finzi and Bridge from the first half of the 20th century, a contemporary English composer, Cecilia McDowell, contemporary American composers Paulus, Thompson and Matthias, and three contemporary New Zealand composers, David Hamilton, John Rimmer and Anna Griffiths. John Rimmer is also a member of the choir and was once one of Tecwyn’s university teachers.
The sixty singers comprise the Teapot Valley Choral Camp choir for 2024. Other than in the Covid years, this choral event has been held each January since 2001. The choristers come from across New Zealand and enjoy rehearsing in the peacefulness of Teapot Valley with an outstanding conductor for nine days. It is hard work and a lot of fun for all involved. The hard work culminates in a public concert.
