Master of Music Therapy, Grade 8 Royal Schools of Music (classical guitar)
Shane trained initially as a classical guitarist, undertaking the Royal Schools of Music exams. He then transitioned from part-time teaching (during university) into full-time, based at many of the largest secondary schools in Auckland. Shane then travelled as a solo guitarist, entertaining on cruise ships (Princess and NCL), and in bars throughout Tokyo, (Japan) and Nashville (Tennessee, USA). After many years performing, Shane returned to NZ to achieve his Master of Music Therapy, then spent several years in San Jose (California, USA) heading up the guitar department at a small university. Currently, Shane commutes around NZ and Australia as New Zealand’s premiere wedding guitarist, and teaches students, located throughout NZ and the US, via Skype and webcam.
Skills and expertise
Shane is happy to teach any style of guitar playing. As a performer, he majors in fingerstyle, classical and some jazz. His comprehensive approach to teaching is based upon 37 years of playing and over 25 years of teaching. He utilises online tools successfully – Skype (or FaceTime or Google Hangout), Google Docs and Guitar Pro – teaching students ranging from beginner through to university level. Shane has developed an effective curriculum, but personalises it through each student’s respective wish lists. Both practical and theoretical components of a musical education are accounted for, using an integrated approach, so students first learn to ‘do’, then why and how they ‘do’. Lessons contain warm-up techniques, stretching exercises, practice approaches and appropriate theory concepts. Shane’s students over time, become loyal, to their guitar, and to Shane himself, as a teacher and a friend.
