Biography
Rebecca is currently on maternity leave.
Rebecca was born and raised in Nelson. She commenced dance at the age of 5 years, studying Jazz, Tap and Ballet. A former student of Gillian Francis and Helen Brown, she went on to pursue full time tertiary Ballet at the International Ballet Academy in Christchurch.
She later joined Southern Ballet Company 2005. Rebecca performed many lead roles throughout her training. Her favourites include Swanhilda – Coppelia, Puck – Midsummer night’s dream and the Sugar Plum Fairy – Nutcracker.
She was awarded the IDTA NZ scholarship for highest points Advanced II Ballet, and competed at the NZ National Ballet Award 2003. Rebecca was also awarded her Solo Performance Diploma for both Jazz and Tap NZAMD.
As a fully registered teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance, and New Zealand Association of Modern Dance, Rebecca directed her own studio “Rebecca Bignall Boutique Dance Company.” The company excelled for 12 successful years, specializing in quality training for Classical, Contemporary and stylized Jazz students. Past and present students have pursued their love of dance in Australia and the USA, or as Associates and Scholars of the NZ School of Dance.
Alongside dance, Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary Education) and has been a part time school teacher for the past 10 years. In 2018 she completed a Diploma of Positive Psychology and Wellbeing and advanced her career in Auckland as a Classical Ballet teacher at Auckland City school of the Arts. 2018 also saw Rebecca selected as an aspiring Examiner of the NZAMD.
As a regular adjudicator throughout NZ, Rebecca is excited to return to Nelson, passionate about sharing her knowledge and love of Ballet with the NCMA community.
