Biography
Manjit Singh upholds the essence of traditional Tabla playing and Indian classical singing. He has been teaching and performing music since 1997. He has a Masters in Tabla and a Bachelor degree in Indian Classical Vocals from India. He has also finished an undergraduate degree of Musicology, post-graduate in Indian and Jazz collaborations from the University of Auckland.
He is currently pursuing research on musical skills and music education for his Masters degree at University of Auckland. Manjit is NZ’s first itinerant music teacher to teach Indian music in secondary colleges and university. Manjit has run a private music academy in Auckland since 2009 which has trained many students from the wider community in South Auckland.
Other than teaching Manjit also performs regularly with international and local musicians of Indian, Jazz and world music genres. He has also composed and recorded the opening ceremony music for ICC world cup 2015.
Skills and expertise
Manjit uses the methodology of traditional Indian classical music education with the facilitation qualities of western music teaching methodology for his teaching. His main strength is his patience and eagerness to spread awareness about Indian music and to share the virtue of musical skills offered in the traditional learning of Indian musical subjects such as tabla, vocals and rhythmic / melodic components of Indian music in abstract form for the students of western music.
