Level 4 Diploma in Music - Te Auaha, Wellington
Liam began learning guitar with Mark Jansen at the age of 12/13. He was a part of all things “music”, including the Nelson Youth Jazz Collective, Smokefree Rockquest, and the Nayland College Boys Choir. He recorded and co-produced 2 EP’s with Mark McKenzie and Robert Sissons. More recently Liam has lived in Wellington where he studied music at Te Auaha and performed at events such as Cuba Dupa, Sofar Sounds, and Gardens Magic. Now back in Nelson, Liam is excited to be able to teach something he is incredibly passionate about.
Skills and expertise
Liam has a wide knowledge of the guitar and will be able to cover, beginner open chords, bar chords, all the way to advanced jazz inversions. Strumming and fingerpicking techniques, all 12 major scales and modes, and their relative minor.
He will be able to get students to apply basic music theory to the guitar as the course progresses.
Being a songwriter, Liam can also show students that are interested how to write their own song, and cover key components to writing a song.
Liam is new to teaching, but has been a student for so long, that he know’s what works and what doesn’t. Everyone absorbs information differently, and it is his goal to understand each of his students wants and needs out of their lesson/s.
Firstly, their music taste, and secondly their playing ability. Knowing these two things will help Liam to pick out appropriate songs for students to practice, and will maintain enthusiasm and engagement across all age groups during the lessons.
