Kyoko Takashima was born in Fukuoka,Japan and started playing the piano at the age of 5.
She graduated in piano performance and music education at Osaka College of Music in Japan.
She also joined the summer academy at The Mozarteum University of Salzburg in Austria.
Formerly Kyoko was a lecturer of piano at Osaka Aoyama University and also an accompanist for vocalists for the postgraduate course at Osaka College of Music for about 30years.
She was a committee member of Sakai City Opera and she was involved in many operas in Osaka and she performed a number of solo recitals and piano concerts.
Kyoko also accompanied solo artists in Japan and internationally, in Austria, Brazil, Argentina,
She is especially proud of her involvement in Japanese traditional opera in Perth and Seattle.
In 2010 Kyoko held a recital of works by Bach and Toru Takemitsu in Auckland and followed this up with a concert for the Christchurch earthquake in 2014.
She moved to Nelson in March 2021.
Skills and expertise
Kyoko’s philosophy is that playing music is interesting and enjoyable. After a lesson students should feel happy and energized. The piano is an excellent instrument which can be played by people of all ages and abilities. It is very versatile and lends itself to being played solo, in duets and in a larger orchestra setting.
