Biography

Erica Sim, a Mezzo Soprano, has been teaching voice for over 20 years. She recently stood down as National President of the NZ Association of Teachers of Singing (2013- March 2017) and is currently on the Council.

Erica sings with Avid Opera, and is a regular soloist with the Nelson Civic Choir. Performances include: Elijah (Mendelssohn), Mozart Requiem, Stabat Mater (K Jenkins), Petite Sollenelle (Rossini).

In 2016, she travelled to Japan as part of the Miyazu Sister City 40th Anniversary choir as a choir member and soloist.

Skills and expertise

Erica enjoys working with all age groups and has experience with primary, secondary and adult students. She has taught as an itinerant voice tutor in several high schools and is currently at Waimea College in Richmond.

In every lesson, Erica draws on her experience in classical, Estill and vocal pedagogy.

Students work towards their individual goals, gaining confidence and performance experience and can choose to sit exams or enter competitions. Theory lessons are available for beginner grades.

In 2017, Erica travelled to Stockholm to attend the International Voice Teachers Congress (ICVT). She has attended many conferences and workshops with leading experts including:
Dr Scott McCoy (Voice Science), GillyAnne Kayes (author, the actor and the singer), Jeremy Fisher (Vocal Process), Stephen Robertson (Royal Conservatoire Scotland), Dr Trineice Robinson Martin (Gospel and Soul), Dr Kenneth Phillips (Teaching Kids to Sing), Dr Irene Bartlett (Contemporary) and Paul Farrington (Estill).
