NCMA Gala Concert
- This event has passed.
Music lovers from across the region won’t want to miss this very special event marking the opening of NCMA’s facilities after nearly 5 years of closure. It promises to be a feast for both ears and eyes.
Our gala concerts are a celebration of all the things that have made NCMA what it is today. It’s about our history and all the people and groups who have been involved in shaping this organisation over the last 100 years. It’s about the Steinway and the Cawthron Organ.
The Gala Concert will feature the very people that shape our organisation; our NCMA students and local musicians alongside the New Zealand String Quartet and international pianist Matteo Napoli.
Audience members will be treated to a grand programme of music fit for a special occasion such as this.
Ticket holders will enjoy some pre-concert musical entertainment by local band Buskudara. For the main event the New Zealand String Quartet will perform Gareth Farr’s “Ripple Effect” with NCMA students. This captivating piece was commissioned for the Sleeping with the Steinway fundraiser and donated to NCMA by Gareth Farr. Nelson City Brass will present Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, while Matteo Napoli and the Nelson Symphony Orchestra will perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The Cawthron Organ will then take centre stage with organist Alan.K Gray and the Nelson Symphony Orchestra performing the Maestoso-Allegro from Saint Saen’s Symphony No. 3. NCMA’s young performance group Schola Musica will delight with Prokofiev’s Theme from Peter and the Wolf op67. To round off the evening’s celebrations, the Nelson Civic Choir and the Nelson Symphony Orchestra will perform the Hallelujah Chorus form Handel’s Messiah.
Concert goers can choose between the Saturday night concert where wine and nibbles will be provided, or the Sunday afternoon concert with the same programme, but without the refreshments.
Tickets will be on sale from 1st May.
